Our guaranteesThe 14k gold-filled wire passes through the artisan's hand before becoming a bracelet, necklace, ring, or earring. This collection brings together pieces hand-shaped in this material: from the Original Personalized Bracelet, an iconic piece from the atelier, to the Original Personalized Ring, along with hoops, brooches, and message necklaces. Each piece is hand-shaped in Paris, with no mold and no engraving.
14k gold-filled: what it is, and why it matters
14k gold-filled, the legal term used in English-language fine jewelry, is a solid layer of 14k gold bonded to a brass or bronze base through heat and pressure. This technique carries 50 to 100 times more gold than traditional gold plating, giving it the same properties as solid 14k gold wire. Gold-filled wire exists only in yellow and rose tones — never in white.
In practical terms, this means a color that stays stable over time and water resistance that classic gold plating simply doesn't offer. Showers, pools, the beach: 14k gold-filled jewelry handles all of it without hesitation, except during intense physical activity or repeated friction, when it's best removed to protect the delicacy of the hand-shaped forms. Its lifespan is measured in decades.
Hand-shaping itself is fundamentally different from engraving: here, the precious wire is shaped in one continuous piece, while engraving carves a motif into a flat surface. Once a word or initial is hand-shaped, the entire piece is work-hardened — a cold metalworking process that gives it its shape memory. At tension points, laser micro-welding reinforces the piece without ever weakening the wire.
14k gold-filled, gold plating, and vermeil: the differences
Three materials often come up when shopping for personalized jewelry: gold plating, vermeil, and 14k gold-filled. Gold plating deposits a thin layer of gold onto a base metal — so thin it fades over time and reacts poorly to water. Vermeil coats 925 sterling silver with a layer of gold, an appealing middle ground that's still more fragile against repeated friction. 14k gold-filled, with its significantly thicker gold layer, outlasts both in durability, while remaining more accessible than solid 18k gold.
For those seeking a richer gold tone and a solid wire, 18k gold is available in yellow, rose, and white: each piece is hallmarked, certified, and hand-shaped by one of the Maison's jewelry artisans. At the other end of the range, 925 sterling silver — an alloy of 92.5% pure silver, hypoallergenic and antibacterial — suits sensitive skin and anyone who prefers a bright white finish. The Sterling Silver collection and the Gold Vermeil collection make it easy to compare these finishes before choosing.
Pieces hand-shaped in this material
Yellow 14k gold-filled wire runs across the full range of the atelier's personalized jewelry. On the wrist, the Richelieu Personalized Bracelet and the Nude Pure Bracelet feature a hand-shaped word, while the Hammered O Bracelet and the Bramble Bracelet focus on sculpted forms without lettering. Around the neck, the Original Personalized Mantra Necklace can hold a short phrase or up to five names, while the Richelieu Personalized Necklace is designed for two names side by side.
For initial personalization, the Original Initial Necklace carries one or several letters, each representing a name chosen by the customer. Lettering on hand-shaped words is always lowercase, with the exception of a capital "J" when it opens a word, with no accents or apostrophes, and the option to add spacing on request. The Capital and Capital Initial styles, on the other hand, are written entirely in uppercase.
For the ears, the Éos Mini Hoop Earrings and the Corsica Mini Stud Earring offer the same material without personalization, alongside charm pieces like the Corsica Trio Charms Bracelet. In rings, available from size 4.5 to 10.5 (US), the Original Personalized Ring accepts a word up to five letters, while the Original Initial Ring is limited to one or several initials. Care and warranty
14k gold-filled jewelry requires no special care: a soft cloth every now and then is enough to keep its shine. It's not afraid of water, unlike gold plating, and can go through showers, pools, and beach days without issue. The only precaution is to remove it during intense physical activity or repeated handling, to protect the delicacy of the hand-shaped wire.
Every piece of jewelry carries a one-year warranty from the date of purchase. One exception applies to this material: the shine of 14k gold-filled jewelry is guaranteed for life. A non-personalized piece can be refunded or exchanged, while a piece hand-shaped to order with a word or initial chosen by the customer cannot be exchanged or refunded. Every piece leaves the atelier in a jewelry box.
Hand-shaping, manufacturing time, and in-person personalization
Since 2014, Atelier Paulin has hand-shaped every 14k gold-filled piece in Paris, wire by wire. Manufacturing takes 1 to 3 business days for sterling silver and 14k gold-filled, before shipping. Home delivery is added on top of that — expect 2 to 5 days to receive your order. In Paris, two options shorten the wait: come have your jewelry personalized directly at the atelier in about thirty minutes, or have it delivered by same-day courier.
To explore other materials and styles, the Nonza collection and the Original collection complement this one with other approaches to hand-shaped precious wire.</markdown_md>
