The wire casts a shadow that traces the outline of the letter rather than cutting into a flat surface: that's the whole principle of hand-shaping, as opposed to engraving.
Outline: our selection
The collection is built around four initials, each shaped across three types of pieces. On the ring side, the Outline Letter L Ring - Yellow 14k Gold-Filled and the Outline Letter O Ring - Silver carry the same three-dimensional design in two different materials. For the ear, the Outline Letter V Ear Cuff - Yellow 14k Gold-Filled sits without a piercing, while the Outline Letter E Ear Cuff for Men - Silver takes the same line into a version shaped for a man's ear. The wrist gets its own piece with the Outline Letter L Cuff Bracelet - Yellow 14k Gold-Filled, which takes on the rigid, open form of a cuff. Every style comes in sterling silver and yellow 14k gold-filled wire, so the tone can be matched to jewelry already worn, or to the person in mind.
How to choose: initial and material
The choice starts with the letter — L, O, V, or E — the first letter of a name or a short word. Material comes next. Sterling silver gives a bright, white tone, hypoallergenic and suited to sensitive skin. Yellow 14k gold-filled wire, also known as 14k Gold Filled, carries a solid layer of gold noticeably thicker than standard gold plating and isn't affected by water: showering, swimming, or the beach are not a problem — only intense physical activity calls for taking it off, to protect the fine detail of the wire. The type of piece then depends on how it will be worn: a ring for discreet, everyday wear, an ear cuff for a visible letter without altering the earlobe, a cuff bracelet for a bolder presence on the wrist. Nothing stops you from pairing two initials across two different pieces, for two names worn separately.
Materials and personalization
Outline pieces are hand-shaped in sterling silver or yellow 14k gold-filled wire, two materials that ask for no complex care: a soft cloth is enough for the gold-filled wire, and silver may develop a light, natural, reversible tarnish on contact with air, without affecting its quality. Ring sizes range from 48 to 62 (French sizing). Since 2014, Atelier Paulin has hand-shaped its pieces in Paris, wire by wire, using a single continuous length of precious wire worked with pliers, before the whole piece is work-hardened to set its shape memory. Each piece is presented in a gift box. Hand-shaping takes 1 to 3 business days for silver or gold-filled wire, followed by 2 to 5 days for home delivery; in Paris, personalization can be done directly at the atelier in about thirty minutes.
