A personalized ring carries a name or initial, hand-shaped from a single continuous precious wire. The collection includes three distinct styles, in sterling silver, 14k gold-filled, or 18k gold, from size 4.5 to 10.5. Since 2014, Atelier Paulin has hand-shaped these pieces in Paris, one by one.
Personalized name rings: the three styles
Three styles make up the Maison's personalized ring collection. The Original Personalized Ring features a hand-shaped word, up to five letters, in lowercase script. The Original Initial Ring carries one or several initial letters, standing for one or several names, in the same lowercase script as the Original style. The Capital Initial Ring shifts register: a single uppercase letter, for a bolder, more graphic look.
These three styles aren't distinguished by material but by what they say. The hand-shaped word spells out a full name or short word, the initial evokes a person without spelling out the name, and the capital letter stands alone as a single, striking sign. Each style comes in several materials: the Original Personalized Ring in 18k white gold and its 18k yellow gold counterpart share the same script as the gold-filled version — only the material changes. The Capital Initial Ring in 18k yellow gold is also available in 18k white gold.
The lettering on the hand-shaped word style follows one consistent rule across the atelier: lowercase letters, except a "J" at the start of a word, which takes a capital. Accents and apostrophes cannot be hand-shaped, and spaces can be added upon request. Symbols remain possible, also upon request. For the initial style, one letter or several letters placed side by side stand for one or several names — never a random character chosen from an alphabet.
The art of precious wire
Every letter is hand-shaped from a single gold or silver wire.
The metal is cold work-hardened to hold its shape, then reinforced with laser micro-welding at the tension points. Atelier Paulin has been hand-shaping in Paris since 2014.
How many letters, and which style?
Choosing a style starts with what you want to spell out. A full word, up to five letters, is hand-shaped on the Original Personalized Ring — a short first name, a nickname, a word that matters. An initial, or several, finds its place on the Original Initial Ring, in the same lowercase script as the word style. The Capital Initial Ring answers a different intention: a single uppercase letter, bolder, more visible.
This same logic around message length appears elsewhere in the atelier's collections, at different scales. The Original Mantra Necklace can carry a short phrase or up to five names, while the Richelieu Duo Necklace is limited to two names. Rings, by comparison, stay with shorter messages, in keeping with the scale of the piece and the readability sought on the finger.
Each ring hand-shaped to order with a customer's chosen word cannot be exchanged or refunded, unlike a non-personalized piece. This is worth knowing before choosing your lettering.
14k gold-filled, 18k gold, or sterling silver?
Three materials make up the personalized ring palette, each with its own properties. 14k gold-filled wire is a solid layer of 14k gold bonded to a brass or bronze core. It contains 50 to 100 times more gold than traditional gold plating, giving it the same properties as solid 14k gold wire. It comes in yellow and rose, never in white.
18k gold is a solid gold wire composed of 75% pure gold — what the Maison calls the gold of French tradition. Every 18k gold ring is hallmarked, certified, and hand-shaped by one of the Maison's artisan jewelers. It comes in yellow, rose, and white — the only one of the three materials offered in white.
Sterling silver contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals. Its bright, luminous white tone makes it a hypoallergenic, antibacterial material, well suited to sensitive skin.
What sets a personalized ring apart from an engraved one comes down to technique: the wire is hand-shaped in three dimensions, while engraving cuts a motif into a flat surface. The hand-shaped wire is then laser micro-welded at tension points for reinforcement, then work-hardened across the entire piece after shaping — never letter by letter — which gives it its shape memory.
Wearing and caring for a hand-shaped piece
Care depends on the material. 14k gold-filled needs no special care — a soft cloth from time to time is enough, and it isn't afraid of water: showers, pools, and the beach all remain possible. The one precaution, to preserve the delicacy of the hand-shaped wire, is to remove it during intense physical activity. 18k gold also just needs warm water and mild soap, dried with a soft cloth.
Sterling silver behaves differently: it's a living metal that can develop a light, natural, and reversible tarnish on contact with air or humidity. A rinse with warm, soapy water is enough to restore its shine, but unlike gold-filled, it's best to avoid pools, showers, and sports while wearing a silver ring.
Hand-shaping a sterling silver or 14k gold-filled ring takes 1 to 3 business days at the atelier; an 18k gold ring takes 2 to 5 business days, excluding shipping. Home delivery then takes 2 to 5 additional days. In Paris, two extra options are available: personalization directly at the atelier in about thirty minutes, or same-day courier delivery. Each ring comes presented in a jewelry box, with a one-year guarantee from the date of purchase — except for the shine of the 14k gold-filled, which is guaranteed for life.
To complete the look, personalized gold and silver bracelets share the same materials and lettering as the rings.
