18K Gold (750/1000): What Does This Number Actually Mean?

The number "750/1000" indicates the proportion of pure gold in the alloy: 75% gold, with the remainder made up of other metals that give the wire its strength and durability. This proportion is what defines 18K gold, known in France as "the gold of French tradition." It's not a plating or a thin surface layer — it's solid gold wire, through and through, from the first step of hand-shaping to the last.

Every 18K gold piece hand-shaped at the Atelier is hallmarked and certified, a guarantee of its true gold content. This step isn't cosmetic: the hallmark holds the jewelry artisan who shaped the piece accountable.

Unlike 14K gold-filled, also called Gold Filled 14K, which is a solid layer of gold bonded onto a brass or bronze base, 18K gold is a wire that's 75% gold all the way through. Each material has its own logic, but they aren't interchangeable in terms of composition.

18K Gold: How the Wire Becomes Jewelry in the Artisan's Hands

At the Atelier, a single 18K gold wire, unbroken from start to finish, is hand-shaped to form the chosen word, name, or initial. No surface is ever carved into: the process is about shaping the wire itself, curve by curve — never working into an already-finished flat surface. This difference in nature is what sets hand-shaping apart from engraving.

Once the word is hand-shaped, the piece goes through laser micro-welding, a reinforcement technique applied at the wire's tension points. The hand-shaped wire is therefore laser micro-welded, which doesn't take away from the fluidity of its lines. Next comes work-hardening: cold-working the metal, applied to the entire piece once shaping is complete, never letter by letter. This is what gives the wire its shape memory and long-lasting resilience.

Lettering is entirely lowercase, except for the "J," which is hand-shaped as a capital when it opens a word. There's only one script style for the hand-shaped word: cursive. 18K gold is the only material at the Atelier available in three colors: yellow, rose, and white. This choice isn't minor — it noticeably changes the final look of the piece, especially on personalized jewelry where the wire's color plays off the shape of the word or initial.

Yellow 18K gold remains the shade closest to French jewelry-making tradition, warm against every skin tone. Rose gold, softer in tone, highlights the delicacy of the wire on fine pieces like a bracelet or ring. White gold, unique to 18K gold, offers a more contemporary, understated look, especially sought after for personalized rings and wedding bands.

18K Gold vs. Gold-Filled: Which Material for Which Use

14K gold-filled, also called Gold Filled 14K, is a solid layer of gold bonded by heat or pressure onto a brass or bronze base. It contains 50 to 100 times more gold than traditional gold plating, giving it properties close to those of 585/1000 gold wire. It doesn't fear water: showering, swimming, and the beach are all fine, with the only precaution being to remove it during intense physical activity, to preserve the delicacy of the hand-shaped wire. Its lifespan is measured in decades.

18K gold, meanwhile, is a solid wire that's 75% gold all the way through, with no metal base underneath. Its care is just as simple: lukewarm water, mild soap, drying with a soft cloth — no special precautions needed.

The difference between the two materials, then, isn't about everyday durability, but about how the wire itself is built and, for many clients, the heirloom value of solid gold. Gold-filled comes only in yellow and rose; 18K gold adds white to the mix.

Personalizing an 18K Gold Piece: Words, Names, and Initials

18K gold offers the same personalization options as the Atelier's other materials. The hand-shaped word lets you add a name or short word, in lowercase, without accents or apostrophes, with the letter "J" in capital when it opens the word. The initial, meanwhile, carries one or more letters referring to one or more names, hand-shaped in capital on the Capital and Capital Initial designs.

The Original Mantra Necklace, available in 18K rose gold, can hold a short phrase or up to five names on a single wire. For an 18K gold ring, three designs are available: the Original Personalized Ring with up to five letters, the Original Initial Ring, and the Capital Initial Ring, in sizes 48 to 62.

In Paris, clients in a hurry have two options: come have their piece personalized directly at the Atelier in about thirty minutes, or have it delivered same-day by courier. For remote orders, home delivery takes 2 to 5 days, shipping included, once the 2 to 5 business days of hand-shaping at the Atelier are complete.

Each piece is presented in a jewelry box, with no pouch or separate certificate. A piece hand-shaped to order with a chosen word cannot be exchanged or refunded; a non-personalized piece can.
