What Is Sterling Silver 925, Exactly?

Sterling silver 925 is an alloy containing 92.5% pure silver, with the remaining 7.5% made up of other metals — a minimum fineness of 925 parts per thousand, which is where the name comes from. That small percentage of added metal is what gives the alloy the structural strength pure silver lacks on its own, since pure silver alone is too soft to hold the shape of a bracelet or ring through daily wear.

The result is a bright, luminous white metal — cool to the touch, with a reflective quality that reads as clean and understated rather than flashy. How a Sterling Silver Piece Is Hand-Shaped, Wire by Wire

A sterling silver piece at Atelier Paulin begins as a single wire of precious metal — never a pre-formed blank, never a surface waiting to be marked. The wire is hand-shaped, formed with pliers letter by letter or curve by curve, until the piece takes its final silhouette. Only once the entire piece is complete does it go through work-hardening: a cold-working process applied to the whole piece after shaping, never letter by letter, which gives the silver its shape memory and resilience against daily wear.

At tension points — where a name connects back into the chain, for instance — laser micro-welding reinforces the joint invisibly. The wire itself is micro-welded at these points; this is a reinforcement technique, not a substitute for the hand-shaping itself.

This is fundamentally different from a technique where a motif is cut into a flat surface: here, the letter is born from the wire itself, not carved into a surface. For sterling silver 925 specifically, shaping takes 1 to 3 business days at the workshop — that's the time spent hand-forming and work-hardening, separate from shipping. Caring for Sterling Silver 925: What to Know Day to Day

Sterling silver is what we call a "living" metal. In contact with air, humidity, or certain chemical products, a thin layer of oxidation can appear on the surface — this is a natural, reversible phenomenon and never a sign of poor quality. A soft cloth and lukewarm soapy water are enough to bring back its shine.

The one meaningful difference from our gold-filled pieces: sterling silver should be kept away from the pool, the shower, and intense sport. Gold-filled jewelry can handle water without issue, but silver's oxidation process is accelerated by prolonged moisture and chlorine, so we recommend removing silver pieces before swimming or showering.

Beyond that, sterling silver asks for very little. Store it away from direct humidity when not worn, and a light polish with a soft cloth every so often keeps the surface bright. Sterling Silver 925 vs. Gold-Filled and 18k Gold: Choosing Your Material

All three materials at Atelier Paulin — sterling silver 925, 14k gold-filled, and 18k gold — start from the same principle: a single wire of precious metal, hand-shaped rather than cast or cut into. But each has its own character.

Sterling silver 925 offers a bright white tone, hypoallergenic comfort, and requires care around water. 14k gold-filled — also known as Gold Filled 14k, the legal English term in fine jewelry — is a solid envelope of 585/1000 gold applied under heat or pressure onto a brass base. It contains 50 to 100 times more gold than traditional gold plating, giving it the same properties as solid 14k gold wire, and comes in yellow or rose only. Unlike silver, it doesn't fear water at all — showers, pools, and beach are fine, with the one caveat of removing it during intense physical activity to protect the delicacy of the hand-shaped form.

18k gold, meanwhile, is a solid wire composed of 75% pure gold, sometimes called "the gold of French tradition." Each piece is hallmarked, certified, and hand-shaped by one of our jewelry artisans, and it's available in yellow, rose, and white — the only one of the three offering a white gold option.

Personalizing a Sterling Silver Piece: Names, Initials, and Lettering Rules

Sterling silver pieces at Atelier Paulin can be personalized in two ways. The first is a hand-shaped word — a name or short word formed letter by letter in cursive, entirely in lowercase, except the letter "J" which is hand-shaped in uppercase when it begins a word. Accents and apostrophes aren't part of the hand-shaping process, though spaces can be added on request.

The second is the Initial: one or several initial letters referring to one or several first names — not a character picked from a ready-made alphabet, but the initial of someone specific. Our Original Initial Ring works this way, and the Original Personalized Brooch accepts up to 10 letters as a full word instead.

Separately, our Capitale and Initiale Capitale models use uppercase lettering by design — that's a different model altogether, not an exception to the lowercase rule. Symbols can also be added on request if you'd like something beyond letters.

Work-hardening, as mentioned earlier, always happens on the whole piece after shaping — never letter by letter — which is why the finished word or initial holds its form for years of daily wear.
