Anelli: The Hand-Shaped Ring Guide from a Paris Atelier

Searching for anelli that carry a name, an initial, or a single word close to the heart? At Atelier Paulin, a Paris atelier founded in 2014, every ring begins as one continuous strand of precious wire — never a flat surface where a motif is later cut in. Our artisans hand-shape each letter directly into the metal, then work-harden the entire piece so it keeps its form for years. In this guide, you'll find the three personalizable ring models we offer, the materials available, sizing from 48 to 62, and what to expect from order to doorstep — 2 to 5 days if you're outside Paris, or a 30-minute wait if you visit the atelier in person.

What Makes a Hand-Shaped Ring Different From an Engraved One

Most personalized rings on the market start from a flat band where a motif is cut into an already-finished surface. Atelier Paulin works the opposite way: a single wire of precious metal is hand-shaped into the letters or initials themselves, so the word or name becomes the structure of the ring rather than a mark added onto it. This is not hand-shaped versus "engraved" as a stylistic choice — it's a different starting point entirely, one that has defined the Maison since 2014.

Once the wire is shaped, the entire ring is work-hardened as a single piece — never letter by letter. This cold-working step gives the metal its shape memory and its resilience against the small knocks of daily wear. At the tension points, laser micro-welding reinforces the joins invisibly; the wire itself is welded, not left unsecured.

The result is a ring you can feel the making of: the slight roundness of a hand-shaped curve, the continuity of a single strand rather than a stamped surface. Anelli made this way sit differently on the finger — lighter in profile, but resilient through years of wear.

Three Anelli Models: Word, Initial, or Capital Letter

Atelier Paulin offers three personalizable ring models, each answering a different kind of request.

Original Personalized Ring — a hand-shaped word of up to five letters, entirely in lowercase, with one exception: the letter "J" is shaped in uppercase when it opens a word. Accents and apostrophes cannot be hand-shaped, but spacing between letters can be added on request. The single approved script for the shaped word is cursive.

Original Initial Ring — this model carries one or several initial letters, each standing for a first name. An initial isn't a character picked from a ready-made alphabet; it's shaped because it represents someone specific to you. This makes it a natural choice for a ring meant to reference more than one person — a partner, a child, a parent.

Capital Initial Ring — a single uppercase letter, shaped in the Maison's block-capital style reserved for this model and for our "Capital" pieces more broadly.

Symbols can be added on request across these models if you'd like to discuss something outside the standard offer. Not every ring in our catalog is personalizable, so if a specific piece caught your eye, it's worth checking before assuming customization is available.

For a related personalization format on a different jewelry type, the more love collection gathers several of our word- and initial-based pieces, including some of the necklace equivalents to these ring models.

Materials and Sizing: From Sterling Silver to 18k Gold

Anelli at Atelier Paulin come in three materials, each with distinct properties.

Sterling silver 925 is an alloy of 92.5% pure silver, prized for its bright white color and its hypoallergenic, antibacterial qualities — a comfortable choice for sensitive skin. As a "living" metal, it can develop a light, natural oxidation over time on contact with air or moisture; this is reversible and never a defect. Clean it with lukewarm soapy water and a soft cloth, and avoid pools, showers, and sport while wearing it.

14k gold-filled (or laminé 585/1000) is a solid envelope of 585/1000 gold bonded under heat or pressure onto a brass base, containing 50 to 100 times more gold than standard gold plating. Available in yellow and rose only — there is no white 14k gold-filled. It requires no particular care, resists water fully (showers, pools, the beach), and lasts for decades; the only exception is removing it during intense physical activity to protect the delicacy of the hand-shaped form.

18k gold (or 750/1000) is a solid wire composed of 75% pure gold, sometimes called "the gold of French tradition." Each piece is hallmarked, certified, and hand-shaped by a Maison artisan. Available in yellow, rose, and white. Care is simple: warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth.

Ring sizes run from 48 to 62. For a color-driven approach to the same personalization logic, the astrology collection pairs initials and symbols with birth-chart references.

How Long It Takes: Shaping, Not Shipping

Two separate timelines matter here, and they're often confused.

Shaping time is what happens inside the atelier, before your ring ever leaves Paris: 1 to 3 business days for sterling silver and 14k gold-filled, and 2 to 5 business days for 18k gold. This is hands-on time — hand-shaping the wire, work-hardening the finished piece, reinforcing tension points with laser micro-welding.

Home delivery is a separate, additional figure: your ring arrives between 2 and 5 days, shipping included, once shaping is complete.

If you're in Paris, two options are unique to the boutique: come in and have your ring personalized on-site in about thirty minutes, or have it delivered by courier the same day. Neither shortcut is available for orders placed remotely, since the hand-shaping still has to happen — but it does mean a name or initial can go from idea to hand in under an hour if you can visit in person.

For everyday wear alongside your ring, the necklaces collection offers pieces built on the same shaping and hardening process, useful if you're assembling a personalized set rather than a single piece.

Care, Packaging, and What Happens if Sizing Is Off

Every Atelier Paulin ring arrives in a case — there is no cotton pouch and no separate artisan certificate; the case itself is the presentation.

Care depends on the material you chose. 14k gold-filled needs no particular routine and tolerates water without issue, aside from removing it for intense physical activity. Sterling silver benefits from occasional cleaning with a soft cloth and lukewarm soapy water, and should stay away from pools, showers, and sport. 18k gold asks for the same gentle warm-water, mild-soap routine.

On returns: a ring that hasn't been personalized can be refunded or exchanged. A ring hand-shaped to order — with your chosen word, name, or initial — cannot be returned or exchanged once made, since it was shaped specifically for you. This is worth confirming before ordering, particularly for a first name or word you're less certain about spelling exactly as you'd like it shaped (remembering that accents and apostrophes aren't part of what we can hand-shape).

If sizing feels uncertain, the 48-62 range covers most adult hands, but reviewing a printable sizing guide before ordering is the safest step, precisely because personalized pieces sit outside our exchange policy.

Questions fréquentes

Can I get an accent or apostrophe hand-shaped into my ring?

No. Atelier Paulin does not hand-shape accents (é, è, à, ü) or apostrophes on any personalized ring. Spacing between letters can be added on request, and symbols are possible if you ask when ordering, but accented characters and apostrophes are not part of what the wire-shaping technique currently supports.

What's the difference between the Original Initial Ring and the Capital Initial Ring?

The Original Initial Ring carries one or more initials in the Maison's lowercase cursive style (with "J" capitalized only at the start of a word), each initial referring to a first name. The Capital Initial Ring carries a single letter in uppercase block style. Both reference specific people rather than a generic alphabet — the letter is chosen because it stands for someone.

How long does a personalized ring take to arrive?

Shaping happens first, inside the Paris atelier: 1 to 3 business days for sterling silver or 14k gold-filled, 2 to 5 business days for 18k gold. Home delivery adds 2 to 5 more days, shipping included. If you're in Paris, you can also have a ring hand-shaped on-site in about thirty minutes, or delivered by courier the same day.

Can I exchange a personalized ring if the size doesn't fit?

No. A ring hand-shaped to order with your chosen word, name, or initial cannot be exchanged or refunded, since it was made specifically for you. Only non-personalized rings qualify for exchange or refund. We recommend checking sizing carefully (available from 48 to 62) before placing a personalized order.

Is 14k gold-filled safe to wear in the shower or at the beach?

Yes. Unlike standard gold plating, 14k gold-filled (or laminé 585/1000) does not fear water — showers, pools, and the beach are all fine, and it needs no particular maintenance beyond an occasional soft cloth. The only recommendation is to remove it during intense physical activity, to protect the delicacy of the hand-shaped form rather than the metal's finish.
