What Makes a Hand-Shaped Diamond Ring Different

Most diamond rings on the market are cast: molten metal poured into a mold, then polished and set. Since 2014, Atelier Paulin has taken a different route. Each ring begins as a single wire of precious metal — never a cast blank — hand-shaped by an artisan at the Paris atelier. The wire is bent, tensioned, and formed around the stone setting by hand, which means no two pieces come out of the workshop identically weighted or angled, even within the same model.

This matters for a diamond ring because the setting has to hold tension evenly around the stone. Once the wire is shaped, the entire piece goes through work-hardening (cold-working the metal after shaping, never letter by letter or point by point) — this is what gives the wire its resilience and its memory of form. At the tension points around the stone, we add laser micro-welding for reinforcement; the wire itself is shaped by hand, then micro-welded, so it never leaves the atelier as an unfinished join.

Choosing Your Metal: 18k Gold, Gold-Filled, or Sterling Silver

A diamond ring's setting metal affects both how it wears daily and how it's cared for. Atelier Paulin offers three options, each with a distinct composition.

18k gold (750/1000) is a solid gold wire composed of 75% pure gold — sometimes called the gold of French tradition. Each piece is hallmarked, certified, and hand-shaped by a jeweler-artisan of the Maison. It comes in yellow, rose, and white, and shaping takes 2 to 5 business days at the atelier (this is workshop time only, separate from delivery).

14k gold-filled (or laminé 585/1000) is a solid envelope of 585/1000 gold pressed onto a brass base, containing 50 to 100 times more gold than standard gold plating. It exists only in yellow and rose — there is no white gold-filled option. Shaping takes 1 to 3 business days. It requires no particular care and doesn't fear water — showers, pools, and beach are all fine, unlike gold plating. The only precaution: remove it during intense physical activity to protect the delicacy of the hand-shaped form.

Sterling silver 925 contains 92.5% pure silver, hypoallergenic and antibacterial — a good option for sensitive skin. It's a "living" metal: a thin oxidation layer can appear naturally with air or humidity, which is reversible and never a quality issue. Unlike gold-filled, avoid the pool, shower, and sport with silver pieces. Shaping also takes 1 to 3 business days.

From Wire to Ring: What Happens at the Paris Atelier

The making of a diamond ring at Atelier Paulin follows a fixed sequence, and none of it is outsourced. An artisan selects a single length of precious wire — never a cast blank, never multiple soldered segments pretending to be one piece — and shapes it by hand around the stone setting. This is the hand-shaping step: tension, curve, and closure all done by hand, not stamped by machine.

Once the form is set, the entire piece undergoes work-hardening — cold-working that gives the metal its memory of shape and its long-term resilience. This happens across the whole ring after shaping is complete, never applied selectively. At the points where tension is highest, typically around the stone's prongs, laser micro-welding reinforces the joins invisibly.

If you're in Paris, there are two ways to get a personalized piece: come to the atelier and have it shaped in about thirty minutes on-site, or have it delivered by courier the same day. For everyone else, shaping takes 1 to 3 business days for silver and gold-filled, 2 to 5 business days for 18k gold — and home delivery, shipping included, runs 2 to 5 days on top of that.

Personalized Ring Models: Word, Initial, or Capital

Not every ring at Atelier Paulin is personalizable, but three ring models are built specifically for it. The Personalized Original Ring carries a hand-shaped word up to 5 letters, formed entirely in lowercase cursive script — except the letter "J," which is shaped as a capital when it opens a word. No accents, no apostrophes; spaces can be added on request.

The Original Initial Ring carries one or several initial letters referring to one or several first names — not a letter picked from an alphabet, but the initial of someone specific. The Capital Initial Ring, by contrast, is shaped entirely in capital letters — this model doesn't follow the lowercase rule at all.

Symbols are possible on request for any of these models. Whichever you choose, the personalized word or initial is shaped first, then the whole ring goes through work-hardening as one piece — never letter by letter.

One practical note on returns: a non-personalized ring can be refunded or exchanged. A ring hand-shaped with a specific word chosen by the customer cannot be exchanged or refunded once made, since it's built to that specification alone. Warranty, Care, and What to Expect Long-Term

A diamond ring from Atelier Paulin carries a 1-year warranty from the date of purchase, covering the piece as a whole. The one exception is the shine of gold-filled wire, which is guaranteed for life — that's specific to the gold-filled envelope, not a blanket lifetime warranty on the entire ring.

Care depends on the metal. Gold-filled pieces need no particular maintenance and can go through the shower, the pool, or the beach without issue — just remove them during intense physical activity to protect the shaped form. Sterling silver is the opposite: skip the pool and the shower, since silver can naturally oxidize (a reversible, cosmetic change, not a defect), and clean it with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. 18k gold also needs only warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth to dry.

Gold-filled pieces are built to last several decades under normal wear. Whatever metal you choose, the ring ships in a jewelry case — there's no cotton pouch or printed certificate included.
